In Absentia
[ Latin in absenti : in, in + absenti, ablative of absentia, absence.]
Absence can signify the notion of failure in the broadest sense - failure to enunciate, failure to make something known, or failure to accurately document. According to Foucault, absence is to drop below "the field of presence." In many ways, absence has been used variably as a strategy of empowerment and as a consequence of disempowerment.
This exhibition series seeks to present work, which either makes reference to the physical space of Raum3 - as a kind of "non-site" within Berlin's Mitte district - or makes productive use of absence in formal terms.
In some instances this would occur in the way shots are framed by the video camera (disparate bits of activity would be isolated from any foreseeable narrative), while in others, a range of data and supporting information have been withheld such that it would not be possible for narrative to be achieved at all.
